I'm really really tempted to subscribe now. It's a great game.

I've had a subscription for a while, but I'm thinking about getting the expansions so I can get a BFR

I'd subscribe (still be subscribed) if I had a decent connection. As it is currently, I end most of my nights by hitting Alt-F4 because the tower on the edge of the fight I was spawning out of was taken while I'm trying to spawn back, and I get auto-moved to the nearest base, which happens to have 50 dots in it (friends, enemies, doesn't matter) and I'm literally lagged for 10 minutes - even just to recall to Sanctuary. I usually don't have the patience to wait the 10 minutes and then another 10 minutes to get back to the battle, so I just kill it and go to bed.

Planetside is the best PvP in any MMO. I wish one of the MMORPGs could come close.

Have you considered shotgunning the modem connection? Not an option if the connection is long distance, but one that might improve speeds otherwise.

Don't know if it would give enough gain to make it worth it though.

I don't know that I'd pay 12.95 monthly for it, but I'm only going to play for 3-4 hours on the weekend, so I wouldn't really take that much advantage of teh Battle Ranks. Since I can do almost everything short of BFR's with my BR6 chars, I'm happy to play for free in any role that's needed. Very Happy

Shotgunning? That's a term I haven't heard before.

I'm capped at 26.4Kbps out here. On rural lines they seem to be able to cap us, and do. Even doubling that would only get me to 52.8Kbps.

Shotgunning was done with a double modem and two line setup. how close are you to a telco CO or Remote?

Satelite could be an option, since the majority of the traffic is downline to your client. I don't know how costly those are these days though, Sprint has a microwave internet set up now that will get you 384 speeds, again availability is questionable.

No idea. I do know it took me 6 months to get a phone line, because I'm off everyone's grid, and nobody wanted to push their line out to this point to hook me up.

I'm two miles of underground cable to the tail-end of a rural line, and I have no idea how far that is from the nearest anything. Though the nearest town that's more than a bump in the road is 15 miles away.

Sign up for GPS internet or go satellite.

I would slit my throat settling for 56k modems.

Dual 56k modems would help you a great deal if the technology is easy to get...that stuff is *old*.

Maybe ISDN? Though if you're at the end of the pike, it may not be available.....

Shotgunning just requires two phone lines, and two modems in your computer, it's a tricky bugger to configure sometimes, but some people swear that it's a good alternative....

Cool, I got a cousin lives in Bastrop, I plan on retiring back down that way, but more north westerly of Austin.

Anyways, if you don't see a small (roughly 6x8) brick building with what looks like a small microwave array, withing 2 miles of your house, then no telco remote. so DSL is out for sure.

Satelite is an option, though it still uses the phone line for the up feed.

As far as satellite is concerned, Earthlink services the 512 area code listings.

check this out as well, Sprint is heavy in the Austin area

Sprint Microwave Broadband

Guys, I've already looked at just about every option available.

Satellite - I can get it, but it has a minimum 1500 ms latency. In PvP games I might as well slit my own throat. Also, about $100/month.

Cable, DSL - Closest is about 15 miles away.

Wireless DSL (Microwave/Radio) - 15 miles away, with an 8 mile range limit and hills between me and them. They said IF I were willing to put up a 400 foot tower, they'd aim a dedicated antenna directly at it, for about $100/month. 400' Antennas are $10k-20k.

'Shotgunning' - with a 26.4 Kbps cap on phone lines out here, with two, I'd be at 52.8 Kbps - about equivalent to 56Kbps. Given the additional cost, hardly worth it.

ISDN - by law available everywhere. Possible 6+ month installation time ("depends on how far out you are"). $400 Installation + $200 Modem + $100/month for 128 Kbps - double regular dialup.

Probably your best bet. I'd do it..but then again I'd never live on a ranch =p

If you really want livable speed, 128 will let you play the games atleast, and the price is big to start with...but 100 a month for livable internet on a ranch is just the cost of business for your hobbies.

Try this KDah

http://www.direcway.bz/pages/11/index.htm

Q: What is HughesNet® broadband by satellite?

A: HughesNet® is the new solution for everyone who is ready for high-speed Internet access. HughesNet® satellite technology makes high-speed Internet available to everyone in the 48 contiguous United States, Canada and Puerto Rico, as long as you have a clear view of the southern sky.

Well have you tried running 15 miles of fiber optic with amps out to the mainline tap?
