nProtect Game Guard is a rootkit designed to prevent cheating that is auto-installed with some games. Rootkits, when installed, hide themselves, and are very hard to uninstall. This one conflicts with some OSes and a whole list of programs. There is no easy way to uninstall this rootkit, and unless you're familiar with hacking your registry, you could screw up your machine trying.

These are the currently known games that install GameGuard when you install the game (according to Wikipedia):

* 2Moons (revision 1222)
* 9Dragons (revision 1057)
* Aion: The Tower of Eternity
* Albatross18

Thanks for the list Kdah it gives me a list of games to avoid. I try to avoid any thing that uses rootkits. (I even avoid buying Sony products since the rootkit fiasco.)

You'll notice that most of the games are korean-developed. I've got a couple of those games on my computer right now, and I haven't noticed any problems with performance or functionality. Not that I'm endorsing rootkits in any way, regardless of their benignity or lack thereof.

If you look at the list it's also kind of understandable. Most are F2P games with an item mall. The last thing you would want there is people hacking and cheating their way through th "Pay only" parts of the game.

Another reason to avoid this type of game.

While this was true for previous releases of the game (Korea, China, etc.), it turns out this will not be true for the North America and Europe releases of the game, now called simply "Aion", launching September 2009. It is possible it will resurface in the future.

"After analyzing our open beta test results Aion will not feature GameGuard at launch. We will however continue to pursue ways to effectively utilize GameGuard within Aion in the future. Right now we're focused on providing players with the best possible Aion experience."
