Definitely playing games as a team versus an individual. I don't think I've ever played a game with a group of people that effectively demonstrated and taught team fighting skills to players that had no previous experience.

Body blocking, how to defend, and group healing were just the few tactics that I benefited from. It's something that has always stayed with me throughout all games I've played and has made me a better player because of it.

What were yours?

For a quick one, being able to type out commands quickly in a different way of speaking. Being able to lead a group of strangers with this pseudo chain of command/cat herding.

I really like the ability to ignore the rules and propose people place in a game and letting imagination go wild. Like stopping to smell the virtual roses.

Last of all the togetherness we had. You log in and someone was there. Instead of a quest giver with an ! Over their head, that was a person. A grunt. Giving me a command.

That you can get satisfaction from simply gathering crafting materials in a game.

That doing an otherwise menial task can contribute to the benefit of other people.

That I don't need to be the focus of every story or adventure to enjoy my self.

...and that you can have more fun focusing on a small unintended aspect in a game with others than you can consuming the entirety "main" content by your self.

Shadowclan UO to me was sort of the Seinfeld experience in an MMO. You get together and find amusement in small things. Shadowclan SB was more tragic opera with many memories whose painful dimensions dulled with time.

SC UO was the best time I ever had in gaming. I have never had the time or place to do what we did there back then since then. We did some great online stuff together.

I learned a lot about leadership.

I could already lead, and had been, in other areas, but I hadn't led as well as I learned how to in the Shadowclan. I learned how knowing how to be a good follower makes a good leader. I learned how to listen as much as tell. I learned why there's a distance between the followers and the leader, and what that distance has to be.

And, most importantly, I learned how to allow and encourage others to lead, and how to help them improve and become good leaders. I learned that you can't do it all yourself, that past a certain point you shouldn't even try, that sharing leadership with others is one of the most effective ways to spread your own ability to lead.

And yes, I learned how role-play is supposed to work - how fun it can be when it's working well. I'd played a lot of DnD, and other RP games before Shadowclan, but they'd never taken me completely into the role like Shadowclan did.

Shadowclan was almost pure fun. Yes, some branepane was sprinkled in, but man, was it worth it! I'm not sure that there will ever be a confluence of circumstances and events that will ever work that way again. We had a sandbox like no other that had ever existed (or will likely ever exist again), we gathered a great group of people that had yet to be jaded and ruined by the online experience, and we ran with it!

one of the weirdest things I've noticed now that I went through the Fire Academy is I feel like a real life Gruntee.

although I haven't gotten a job yet as a firefighter, the academy had all the feelings of the orc fort at times.

When I wouldn't know exactly what we were supposed to do, I would just line up by my equipment waiting for the Grunts to start giving orders. There's more to it, but that right there brought a smile to my face as I was putting in the hard work.

Greatest gaming period of my life was my time in Catskills Shadowclan. I never laughed or had as much fun playing a game as I did during those years.

Since I was underage for most of my time as an orc, I really wish I had experienced orc life while inebriated behind the keyboard.

It taught me that roleplaying games didn't have to be all serious and dry. Unfortunately, I only came to that realization between Catskills and the move to Siege Perilous. Although Catskills was fun, SP was INSANELY fun. All the gloves came off and we smashed the boundaries of roleplay there.

It taught me RP was cool, Tribute was better, and team work was best. I am joined in DAOC / Shadowbane. I still miss Shadowbane. Not the buggy game so much, as the general feeling of the clan in that game.

Now I am old and need another nap"....GET OFF MY LAWN!!!"

Grumbles..

It is difficult to put into words how great an experience it was being in ShadowClan. It's almost impossible these days to be a part of a community so large and really willing to commit to roleplaying at all times. While I still play console games, nothing has ever come even close to the impact and enjoyment that UO brought. I am just glad that I was able to spend a few years hanging around the fort with everyone and always finding a way to have fun. It is amazing how almost 20 years after joining I can still remember so many of the experiences and fellow Orcs. I think that is the true testament to how special it was, especially considering I often can't remember what I did last week. Laughing

Wishing it didn't end...
Mmorpgs aren't the same anymore.
Maybe a mobile game (easy for anyone to run anywhere anytime, no high end pc necessary) could be possible but idk.
Order and Chaos (first not 2nd) has orcs and is basically baby WoW
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gameloft.android.ANMP.GloftMMHM
But that's just a pipe dream.
Sad I missed the prime of SC and only experienced the end but still have good memories of it.
Thanks everyone for so much fun.

Pretty much this. SC was immersing yourself in the environment and having fun with a group without being so serious about game mechanics. It was so liberating not worrying about gear and just having fun

Hard to believe it was 22 years ago now.......... Still no experience has matched that. I'm sure life has changed a lot for all of us from 1997 till now 2019. Hopefully everyone is doing good!
