The Gruk

Xulgag watched as Girm disappeared to the west. Girm had just given the keys of the keep to Xulgag saying “Now lat habs tu kount da shinies”. Then smiling, he left.

Soon Pigulg climbs from wherever it is he slumbers to receive his copy of the new key. They stay and chat for a time, but soon, Pig decides its time to slumber again, leaving Xul alone in the keep. Wandering through the empty corridors, seeing the old weapons from clan mak’rs of old like Grip’ta, Drutha and Luska. Mak’rs during the hayday of the clan. Resting on a chair in the central chamber, Xul remembered those days from when he was a runtee.

He remembered when he first took his runtee test and failed to hide properly the first few times in from\nt of no less than 5 grunts. He remembered how Drutha gave him his first bootcamp. H remembered how Smo’dis taught him to use archery and crosshealing at the ligzing wall. He remembered how Fogroth showed him to trap oomies in crossing paralyzing fields, allowing runtees to run in and kill them like a pack of hungry Chihuahuas. H remembered how Blok taught him to step infront of the fleeing human to slow his escape. He remembered how X’ugar gave him his first lesson in group tactics. Xugar was War’Goth at the time of Xul’s runtee-hood. H remembered how Pigulg taught him to place hides around the fort for added protection. He remembered how Rak’Thor taught him how to make deadly archer-clusters. H remembered how Russ’Igg ordered him to gather wood during a UDL attack. He remembered Brugh’s campaign slogan of “Pound Majoka!” He remembered the incident with Tiberius and Burz’Bagu. He remembered being able to walk into the fort at just about any time and finding 10+ orcs. He remembered Toq, Zortee, Zorc, Vorgak, Laghed, Glekun, Kr’Pog, Targash, Xolgug, Grak’Shugam, Ark’, Wag’Tuk, Khadabrah, Smug, Far, Snabba, Ogur, Gorg, Bahg’Nak, Hargak, Ur’ug, Crag’Tar…..Oh and master Crag’tar….

“Xulgah, Xulgah, where’s meh tea” the squeal still echos in Xulgag’s head. In a naieve sense of spirituality, Xulgag had apprenticed himself to Crag’tar. Crag’tar was the Moog’Goth of the Kraath Kuul ruhk. The title means “God’s voice”. It is a master of ceremonies position during a Kuul standing. Crag’tar, taking advantage of the young orc, saw in Xulgag some free labor and a bit of abusive fun. He would often test new spells on Xul, especially if his tea was late. An apology from Xul would usually be followed with a Kal’vas’flam from Crag’tar. But, now Xul can see the lesson that Crag’tar was trying to teach him. Dispite the obstacles and temptations that life may throw in your path, you must remain faithful, you must never loose focus. “From dust and blood we come, to dust and blood we go” goes the old Severed Heads chant.

Xulgag sighed, blinking to refocus his eyes on the empty keep. He thought he knew the keep pretty well. He thought he knew where each trunk happened to be that contained whatever. He thought…. In one hallway, he found a small brown box, covered with a bit of dust. Opening the box, there sat an old redish-brown tomb. The pages were dog-eared and bent. You could see the finger smudges on some of the pages. On the front of the book, he could just bearly make out the scratchings …… Crag’tar. He had found one of Master Crag’tar’s spell books. Again, Xulgag’s mind was awash in memories.

Wandering back to the central chamber of the keep, Xul sat in his chair, thumbing through the book. The characters seemed to swim across the page, not allowing focus. Soon, he became tired and fell asleep.

With a gasp, Xulgag woke up in a clearing. It was a cold morning and the keep was nowhere to be found. But, he had a vague idea that he had been to this clearing before. Then, he recognized it. Xulgag was in the spirit world of his youth. In his younger days, Xul would drink the little bottles of green liquid to achieve higher states of consciousness, bringing him to this world to answer questions, some of which Xulgag was not wise enough to answer.

The old orc appeared in the clearing as is the costum. They met. “Now lat am as old as meh…haw” the old orc spoke. Xulgag attempted to answer, but was waved off and motioned to be silent. “Lat has gruked many lessons, Ligzen, healin, hidee, uruk tactics, clompen, sneeken twice, kiggen, luskin, fishen, cooken, choppen wood agh mojo waters. But, der am ash lesson for lat tu gruk.” The old orc then pointed to Xulgag’s paws. Xul was clutching the tomb he had found in the keep. “Lat neeb tu gruk mojo. Lat neeb tu gruk dat da power ub da Bluudgud am in all libben tingies. It am in da air we breath, id am in da meat we eat, id am in da water we drink. Lat neebs tu gruk how grasp dis power wid blah.” The old orc touched Xul’s lips with his index finger, delivering a shock. “Lat neeb tu gruk dis blah usen lats eyes.” The old orc then touched Xulgag’s forhead. He heard a snap, then nothing.

He woke in the keep, in his chair. The candle was lower, noting the passage of time. In his lap, Xulgag found the book that was his former master’s. Gripping the book in one hand, he picked up a lusk in the other….then stopped. He looked at the hand holding the lusk. It felt ackward and clumsy. But the book….he opened the pages. The characters did not swim, but made distinct passages and phrases. When he spoke them, Xul could feel the energy stiring in the air around him. He knew what he must do. He placed the lusk in a chest, sat back in his chair and opened the book once again.

How can we forget you? Your personal smell still lingers in parts of the fort the wind rarely gets to. Wink

HAR!
Besides, last I heard, there's still a Smug "Igg of Duum" lying around somewhere.

Mayhaps I'll come relieve those glory days sometime soon.
