Under a black moonless blanket of darkness, a chilling shriek pierces the inky silence and a black rider emerges from the edge of the Mirkwood on its dread steed. It turns briefly to peer upward into the darkness of the forest branches briefly as if to be sure whatever, or whoever was there had acknowledged its hideous command before galloping off into the night.

Some time passes before the branches creak and snap quietly as giant forms drop to the forest floor and skitter on spindle legs out of the forest, each one dragging several neatly wrapped silken bundles behind them.

Tiny glittering eyes focus on an odd clump of giant boulders, which suddenly move and stand up and stretch giant limbs. Stone trolls lumber forward and the spiders hiss and skitter sideways indignantly chittering their disapproval of clumsy stone feet narrowly missing their delicate bodies.

One spider, larger than the rest, moves forward to speak in hissing tones to the trolls. They appear to understand vaguely and lower themselves back to the ground. The rest of the spiders swarm over the hulking trolls and begin spinning shiny belts of webbing across their wide bellies – each troll now carrying the silk-pods upon their backs like strange white packages for delivery.

They were, in fact, for delivery… “gifts” to be presented to The Witch King in Angmar for the forces gathering there in service of The Great Eye. Accompanying the trolls back to Gramsfoot, the leader of these Mirkwood spiders - Suliante, left her brood behind to assist in the delivery of her offering. Neatly tucked within each silky sleeping sack was one unconscious orc. Suliante had been carefully collecting prize specimens from a nearby renegade tribe living on the border of the Mirkwood. Never taking too many, just enough, to keep the tribe unaware of who or where the missing vanished to in the night.

Suliante settled herself among the slowly trudging troll slaves. It was a long journey ahead to avoid civilization and the forces of Dunedain fighting against the Witch King’s growing armies…

Ishrat doesn't remember how he came to Gramsfoot - to him all battles have run together with the blood of many and sunk into the dirt under his feet as quickly as his muddy memories. Ishrat only knows fighting alongside Uruk and Wargs is good. He fears The Weavers and shrinks away from their baleful many-eyed glare whenever they creep alongside the columns of marching Uruk. His brain does not understand or remember why the spiders make him afraid, but he swallows the fear with lots of harsh brew and tries to forget. Fight, only fight is good.

Amongst the various tribes gathered at Grams, there is one clan Ishrat sees standing out in battle. Ishrat has no tribe but knows he once belonged to one long ago. His guts tell him it is good to be in a tribe and this tribe is strong. Ishrat tries hard to understand their words and remember to speak respectfully to their leaders, even the giant hideous spider broodmistress who frightens him with her shiny black carapace and poison dripping mandibles.

Many battles Ishrat has run with the Shadow Clan, and many good fights have been won and lost. Finally Ishrat is allowed to wear the tracker's badge to distinguish him from the 'green' uruk fodder. Now he is ready to pledge...

In the thick of one particularly bloody skirmish with the Coldfells forces, Ishrat comes face to face with the deadly Weaver Gobblemoss, Broodmistress of the Shadowclan. Ishrat cringes away from the many glittering eyes she pierces him with questioningly as he approaches and kneels. Ishrat knows immediately he must not show fear and he must submit himself to this spider's leadership and learn to become a powerful warleader and serve the Shadow Clan. He has much to learn!

Throwing himself to the trampled muddy earth at Gobblemoss' feet in the camp where the Shadowclan battlegroup is resting, Ishrat carefully tries to speak the words his thick tongue cannot seem to form properly…

"Dis' uruk gimb da grayt Burguul klan! Am jus' nubhosh snaga heel'ur - lern'n da mojo fur bubhosh comp'n!! … me gimb da durub eye agh lats burguul klan yub??"

The spider looks slightly annoyed... "Burguul? What is this word?"

"Burguul is dark wurd frum taskmasturs. dem wot sez gruk .... shhaaadowww-clan is da grayt burguul!" ... Ishrat tries to form the man words carefully. He's listened to goblins and trolls for far too long...

Gobblemoss chitters and hisses approvingly,

"You wish to be tested to join the Shadowclan?"

Ishrat nods and bangs his chest enthusiastically...

"YUB! Hoowah tu da' shadowzclan! Am redy fur test!"

"Come then, you will follow me to Gramsfoot. There are questions to be answered in the presence of the Taskmaster..." the Broodmistress motions with one spindly leg and turns and skitters off into the night towards the ever burning fires at the base of Mt. Grams...

Great backgrounds! I love that Ishrat's story is tied in with Suliante's... very clever!

Just between you and me, Ishrat... Gobblemoss scares me sometimes too... but then, that's why she's the Brood Mistress!
