According to John Smedley, SOE has ripped up their old plans for the next version of EQ. Now they are promising to make EQNext "...the largest sandbox MMO ever designed."

They are promising a playable build by this time next year.

Damned lies? The Second Coming?

Discuss...

I'm interested. I played a little EQ2 and liked the races, classes, basic game, etc. It just felt too generic of an MMO in a time that I was tired of generic, and I felt like I was joining a game with a million expansions already, so it felt like I'd always be behind.

But having never played EQ, I was surprisingly impressed with how immersive EQ2 was and how much it felt like a D&D campaign of some sort.

So EQ Next is something I'm really interested in. An opportunity for me to try EQ at the start, and then with this recent news of them changing it up entirely and acknowledging that most MMOs are the same with different skins, I'm even more intrigued.

Now that's pretty interesting. I'm shocked... maybe this is a sign of things to come for the genre.

I imagine they're trying something so radically different because they realize that the next big game won't be WoW 2.0

Edit: After reading the article they actually said as much.

A new sandbox would be great. But, I'm not sure how they're going to do it. High level graphics greatly limit how much of a sandbox a game can be.

For example, in UO, we could build middle-of-the-road forts with barrels or hides or other random items. But, in a modern 3D game, that wouldn't work. We could 'barf' by dyeing a big wad of cotton greenish, and dropping it while we bowed and made gagging sound emotes. Again, not possible with modern graphics.

The games that are Sandboxy - like Wurm, or Dwarf Fortress, or Minecraft, all tend to have poor graphics. Partially because trying to represent what players will do in good graphics takes tons of art covering every possibility, and most games can't afford to do all of that art to that standard.

that's a good point, Kdah. It really will come down to the money. Games like wurm are niche. Will someone spend a big AAA budget on a game that will have 100k subs? not likely

Wurm could be big even with it's bad graphics if it had a more intuitive UI and decent combat.

Do you really think so Ganthar? Minecraft got "big" because it was dirt simple. Wurm is fairly complex, i don't think it would have the same impact even with brilliant graphics and smooth controls / interface.

Supposedly they have a relatively new engine called Forgelight that was custom built for their purposes.

Here is Smedley pitching it in 2011...

Sounds interesting. I enjoyed playing EQ (not so much EQ2). Actually SOE has a bunch of MMOs coming out within a year.

I'd definately play EQNext. Only thing is their SOELive just ended last weekend, so it'll be almost a full year until there a pre-alpha build :/

Smedley now quoted as saying EQ Next should release in final later this year:

http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/01/24/smedley-talks-players-as-content-hints-at-eqnext-actual-releas/

No real information yet. Just a lot of phrases from The Smed about how sandboxy and players-as-content it will be.

Game is going to be unveiled at SOE Live, August 1st.

Supposedly there will be a playable build available for people to run in.

Smedley, SOE...the only thing missing is McQuaid, then the gang of thieves would be complete. I've become Jaded over the years by promise after promise unfulfilled, I've neither the inclination, nor the energy to jump on the band wagon any more, these days I am like Missouri, "Show me!"

Still, I'd come closer to believing Smedley and team than I would any of the EA organs.

I agree with earlier sentiments, the beauty that was UO was the depths to which player imagination became involved and the full freedom to improvise. However that was an age of innocence, long gone from the modern MMO landscape, today's market is too regimented towards making maximum profit for minimal input using textbook formulas. The only thing truly changing is the way they get their hands on the consumer's money.

What will S.O.E incorporate into a sandbox style game that will keep the players coming back month after month? I just don't have faith to believe that they can break out of the mold they've cast themselves into and really come up with something fresh.

And I really, really wish they or some other design studio would prove me wrong, I'd truly love to experience the WOW factor again.

Again, I don't see how an MMO with modern graphics can be a sandbox.

But, I'll probably try it, to see what they've done.

yeah it's going to be F2P too so it's difficult to imagine what it's going to be like. I'm really looking forward to see what they came up with though.

EQ Next is cancelled, but Brad McQuaid (founder of EQ) has been working on his own game Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen.

I have been following it and it looks like it will recapture the original EQ feel.

It is still really early pre-alpha

https://www.pantheonmmo.com/

Here is a near 2-hour pre-alpha playthrough with the devs. The flashbacks of Crushbone groups are coming to me!
